Pavel Bořkovec Quartet

Pavel Bořkovec's string quartet was created on the premises of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. All members have studied or are studying at this school. The quartet was mentored pedagogically by Jiří Panoch. Pavel Bořkovec was a professor at HAMU in the years 1947–1967. Among the pupils of this important teacher of modern Czech composers were Pavel Blatný, Jiří Pauer, Vladimír Sommer, Petr Eben, Jan Klusák and Jan Truhlář, Radim Drejsl, Miroslav Raichl. Bořkovec composed two operas, two piano concertos, one concerto grosso, a ballet and five string quartets. The violist of the quartet, Matěj Kroupa, is the composer's great-grandson. Pavel Bořkovec's string quartet focuses primarily on Czech music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The main goal of this ensemble is therefore not only to promote the unjustly neglected authors of Bořkov's generation, but also to serve "new" music and present the music of contemporary composers on concert stages. Pavel Bořkovec's string quartet also has works from classical quartet literature in its repertoire.
