About event
Václavské náměstí, the place where "Czech history was made", with slightly different eyes. Participants will remember riots, revolutions, cattle sales, trams, trees, but also places of worship.
The beginnings date back to the founding of the New Town by the Holy Roman Emperor – Charles IV. in 1348. Mention of the "Horse Market", a place of lively trade, can be found as early as 1362. The name persisted for an incredibly long time, until 1848, when Karel Havlíček Borovský proposed a new - today's name.
On the walk, participants will learn where the first houses were built and why the square is narrower at the bottom. They look into several courtyards with a view of the pavilions, show the site of the anti-nuclear shelter and stop at houses, which in their importance deviate from commercial palaces, banking institutions, cafes and restaurants. They will stand in the places of former fountains and statues or the first traffic light in Prague, they will learn, for example, what "Trafous" is. Finally, they will show where the city gate with a moat was and we will talk about the new future of this space. Life here took place and continues today almost continuously 24 hours a day.
