Szekszárd in the Glass: Kadarka, Blaufrankisch and Bikavér of Szekszárd

One estate in Szekszárd, two generations, one grape as a life's work. A tasting through the wines of the Heimann family.

The Heimann family has been making wine in Szekszárd for generations. A little over three decades ago a new chapter began: Zoltán Heimann sr. and Ágnes returned to the family's farming past and built an estate. In 2026 the handover to the next generation closes — and wine lines kept separate until now stand together under a single name for the first time.

Zoltán Heimann jr. has run the cellar since 2018, the estate for nearly three years, the vineyards for two. Before coming home: Geisenheim and Montpellier, work in South Tyrol, Tuscany, the Mosel and Australia's Yarra Valley. Back in Szekszárd, grape and site lead rather than cellar technique. All 20 hectares are farmed organically. Kadarka and Kékfrankos at the core — pale fruit, vibrant acidity, a clear Szekszárd profile — alongside the house cuvées in the region's blending tradition, Barbár among them in its twentieth year.

This evening moves across the range from fragrant Kadarka to the aged cuvées. A completed generational handover, twenty vintages of Barbár, one grape as a life's work: there is plenty to tell.
