About event

🇨🇿 Prague Spring 2026 Artist-in-Residence Barbara Hannigan belongs to the most original personalities in the world of classical music. He sings and conducts with his own fearlessness, inspires the work of the best composers of today and creates projects that go beyond ordinary concert practice.

The uniqueness of her talent will be fully revealed in the third concert of her festival residency, where she will present herself not only as a singer and actress, but also as a conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. "Together we will present in the Czech premiere my own adaptation of Poulenc's opera La Voix humaine (The Human Voice), which works with a live projection on a large screen above the orchestra, during which I am filmed by three cameras located in the orchestra. The opera based on Jean Cocteau's text is the last conversation of a woman with her ex-lover. Loneliness and intensity of emotions drive this opera to a heartbreaking conclusion," says Barbara Hannigan. Cocteau's monologue inspired a number of works of art, including Pedro Almodóvar's famous film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Likewise, Poulenc's opera conquered Milan's La Scala and other world stages soon after its premiere in Paris and today belongs to the rare jewels of operatic literature of the 20th century.

"This will be the Czech premiere of my production of Poulenc's opera La Voix humaine, which involves live video by means of three cameras placed within the orchestra, and a large screen behind the players. The opera, with texts by Jean Cocteau, seems to be the final conversation between a woman and her (ex)lover. Her isolation and emotional intensity brings the opera to a heartbreaking finish," Barbara Hannigan tells us. Cocteau's monologue inspired a number of other creations, including the famous film by Pedro Almodóvar Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
