Studio Ypsilon
Studio Ypsilon (familiarly known as Ypsilonka) was founded in Liberec in 1963 as an independent theater experimental group, already founded by Jan Schmid, from the beginning until now the leader of the group, the creator of Ypsilon's style and poetics. The distinctive style of Studio Ypsilon, whose conceptual strength is the personality of Jan Schmid (founder, director, author, designer, dramaturg and also actor), is mainly determined by the following features: synthesis, expression, communicativeness, authenticity. This with the ever-present humor that always liberates and brings perspective. Ypsilon's creative method has been collective improvisation since the beginning, programmatic work with controlled chance and infinity, professing the poetics of an open work.
Since the end of 1978, Studio Ypsilon has been based in Prague, in the early functionalist Olympic Palace at Spálená 16, in whose architecturally impressive spaces Schmid's initial vision of the theater as a freely cultivated garden, which can also be understood as a reduced model of the world with all its variety and diversity, governed not only by the laws of nature, but also by the rules that honor every community of decent people, functioning despite the difference of individuals in kinship and reciprocity.
Currently, the theater deals with the meaning of theater in general and the search for its truly contemporary face.
