John Francis Flynn
John Francis Flynn is an Irish singer and multi-instrumentalist whose work straddles the border between traditional and contemporary folk music. He is a founding member of traditional Irish folk group Skippers' Alley. In his solo work, he combines traditional material with influences from the world of post-punk, electronics, improvisation and contemporary music.
In 2021, he released his solo debut I Would Not Live Always, after which was followed by the second album Look Over The Water, See The Sky. On the second recording, he is inspired by old stories and folklore. Here, he elaborates dark and surreal fantasies into eight compositions that deconstruct traditional songs in different ways. Sometimes Flynn slows down the tempo, sometimes he adds breaths or connects an acoustic sound with synthetic electronics. On the Irish musician's second recording, experimental folk becomes a tool for exploring emotions and meditating on the meaning of one's own cultural heritage.
