Divadlo D21

Divadlo D21 is an independent professional theater scene based in Prague's Vinohrady, which has a desire to do theater in its own way. It was founded in 2003 by a group of friendly theatergoers as the Malé Vinohradské divadlo civic association. In November 2012, it was renamed Divadlo D21. The director of the theater is Hana Mathauserová, the artistic director is Jakub Šmíd and the dramaturg is Kristýna Čepková.

D21 is a space for prominent directors, for creative authorial approaches. The ensemble's poetics is close to theatrical shorthand, actor's editing, brisk storytelling and imagination with the use of anti-illusion devices. The dramaturgy of the theater focuses on adaptations of Czech and world literature, original interpretations of dramatic texts or own author's productions. D21 follows strong stories and current topics - it does not avoid socially neglected and controversial topics, it allows itself to be inspired by limits and problems of all kinds. Since the beginning of its existence, the ensemble has also been developing the Divadlo školám project, through which it offers teenage audiences a theatrical experience enriched with accompanying activities including creative workshops linked to individual productions or discussions led by theater lecturers. Divadlo D21 still strives to fulfill the meaning of theater as a living art, where the audience and actors or creators are in close and interconnected contact not only during the theater performance, but also after it.
