David Binney

David Binney is one of the most productive authors of contemporary jazz. During his career, he released more than thirty albums as a leader and participated in more than four hundred recordings as a studio or concert player. The professional magazine JazzTimes identified him as one of the personalities who shaped the alternative jazz scene of the last decades.

Binney's career is connected with several important cultural centers of the United States. He was born in Miami, grew up in Southern California, spent a crucial creative period in New York and currently works in Los Angeles. This broad context is also strongly reflected in his music. As a bandmate, he worked with performers of various genres, including Gil Evans, Norah Jones, Chris Potter, Aretha Franklin, Jamiroquai and Maceo Parker. He also left a significant mark as a member of the group of musicians on David Bowie's highly acclaimed last studio album Blackstar.

Binney's contribution to playing the alto saxophone is evidenced by winning the DownBeat Critics' Poll three times. In addition to concert and studio activities, he is also engaged in pedagogical work. He works on the faculty of The New School in New York and teaches or lectures at other American and European institutions, such as the Manhattan School of Music, the Paris Conservatory or the conservatories in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
