About event
Festival of stories, courage and life in North Korea under the creative direction of Nina Špitalnikova
What is hidden beyond the borders of one of the most mysterious countries in the world? How do people live whose stories the regime never wanted to let out? The Life Behind the Walls: North Korea multimedia festival will be the biggest event about North Korea and North Korean refugees not only in the Czech Republic, but also in the whole of Europe. It is created under the leadership of the writer and Koreanist Nina Špitalniková, who has been processing the testimonies of people fleeing totalitarianism for a long time.
The main immersive installation on an area of 1,500 m² in the Prague Market (Hall 13) will draw visitors behind the walls of the most closed country in the world, into a system whose goal is to control every aspect of life. The strong visual form of the festival is created by the architect Barbara Bencová, portraits of North Koreans who fled from totalitarianism are complemented by Tim Franco, author of the award-winning series Unperson. The exhibition will also include illustrations by Dana Lédl (Myokard).
At the center of the entire event is the authentic testimony of North Koreans who speak for those whose voice was taken away by totalitarianism. The festival is conceived as an intergenerational one, so that the experience of oppression is not lost and that the stories of the survivors affect future generations as well. The children's zone Tota lítá will also be part of it, which playfully introduces the value of freedom to younger visitors.
"The regime silenced them. We hear them."
The festival will make it possible to look beyond the borders of commonly available information about life in the DPRK and connect it with the personal stories of the people who lived behind them.
