Talks & discussions

Topics: Science

About event

Every scientific discovery begins with a curious question, and Curious Debates comes to Trenčín with a discussion that brings science up close through the stories and research of three exceptional women scientists. In an open conversation, they will present their path to science, the topics they are working on, and the moments that surprised them the most in their research or motivated them to continue.

All three guests are united by biology, but each looks at it from a different perspective. One investigates life through genes and metabolism, another focuses on the properties of materials usable in biomedicine, and the third looks for answers in the plant world and food. Together, they will show how diverse and interconnected scientific approaches to the study of life can be.

We will talk about how scientific hypotheses are created, what the work of a researcher entails and why curiosity is one of the most important qualities of a scientist. Everyone who wants to look into the world of science and see it not as a set of facts, but as a process full of questions, search and discovery, is invited to Curious Debates.

Discussants:
Mgr. Martina Gáliková, PhD., geneticist and evolutionary biologist

The scientist studies how organisms adapt to a changing environment. In his research, he focuses on hormonal regulation of metabolism and adaptation mechanisms. He works with a model of fruit flies, tiny organisms of great importance for modern biology. He works at the Institute of Zoology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he heads the department of genetics and ecophysiology. In addition to scientific work, he supports young people in research and actively promotes diversity, inclusiveness, gender equality and breaking down persistent stereotypes.

Doc. RNDr. Michaela Havrlentová, PhD., expert on agricultural plants
After completing her biology studies, she started working at the Plant Production Research Institute, which is now part of the National Agricultural and Food Center. In his research, he has long been devoted to the quality of primary plant production. Since 2014, he has been lecturing at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, where he introduces students to the possibilities of using biotechnology to increase the nutritional value of plants and the development of innovative functional foods. In her free time, she likes to engage in creative activities, reading, cooking and baking.

Mgr. Martina Vitázková, PhD., researcher of biomaterials from bioglass

She studied molecular biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University in Bratislava. After completing her master's degree, she stayed at the maternity hospital for two years, but she began to miss science and applied for doctoral studies at FunGlass, where she now works as a researcher. In research, he is devoted to the preparation and testing of biomaterials based on bioglass for possible applications in biomedicine. It is a promising material for its bioactive potential, it will also serve as an excellent carrier of drugs or therapeutic ions. However, the scientist is still mainly a mother, and even if it is sometimes more difficult to combine work activities with family in addition to research, she tries to use all her free time for walks, trips and games. If she finds a free moment, she likes to read books.

CVTI SR is preparing for 2026 as part of scientific popularization activities exclusively moderated events called "CURIOUS DEBATES" with Slovak scientists with the aim of informing about science in the most attractive way possible. Moderated events will take place in regional cities in the premises of our beautiful libraries. The launch event took place in 2025 at the Regional Library P.O. Hviezdoslava in Prešov on the occasion of the exceptional Week of Slovak Libraries and International Women's Day. You can learn more about previous events in the Curious Debates section.
