"Throwing away bread is a sin. We grew up knowing this. However, on average, each of us throws one slice into the bin a day. Without thinking about it, we waste precious food. With this project, we want to make it visible."
Dieter & Isolde Bornemann

We throw away what we don't need - clothes, technology and food. 40 percent of all food produced worldwide is not consumed, but wasted. The biggest wasters aren't business, industry or even agriculture – it's us, the consumers in our own households. We cause more than half of the mountain of food waste. From a statistical point of view, each of us throws away 75 kilograms of food annually. It is a huge amount of wasted resources and money. Moreover, it burdens the environment: if we were to compare global food waste with the countries of the world, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases that harm the global climate.

Photographer and TV journalist Dieter Bornemann put together this exhibition together with his wife, author and food blogger Isolde Bornemann. The exhibition presents the waste of food in private households in Austria and strongly points out the amount of food we throw away every day. It also shows what are the possibilities of how to best avoid waste and how to best use and consume food. The facts and solutions for breaking down the "culinary waste mountain" motivate one to think.

Eleven families took part in the experiment, and for four weeks they recorded what they threw away. All discarded food was subsequently bought again and photographed with the given family. At the same time, each family provided an insight into their eating habits - with an unannounced look into the refrigerator.

Ausstellung
Aufgegessen! Lebensmittel verwenden statt verschwenden
Dieter & Isolde Bornemann

Vernissage: July 8, 2026, 5:30 p.m.
Ausstellungsdauer: bis August 25, 2026
Bratislava, Österreichisches Kulturforum, Hodžovo nám. 1/A
