Cinema and Propaganda: Russia, 21st Century Famous film critic Anton Dolin will present his new book, published by the Meduza publishing house, “Bad Russians: Cinema from “Brother” to “The Boy’s Word.” An unprecedentedly large-scale study is devoted to the deep connection between cinema and propaganda.
The appearance of Vladimir Putin on the political arena, the tragedy of the Kursk submarine, the Chechen War, terrorist attacks in Moscow and Beslan, contract killings, the annexation of Crimea, the invasion of Ukraine - all these events have been reflected in the blockbusters of the last twenty-five years. Sometimes cinema comprehended what was happening, sometimes predicted, sometimes even programmed. The ideology of Putinism was formed not only by politicians and journalists, but also by producers, directors and actors, many of whom became beneficiaries of the current state system.
Anton Dolin will talk about those popular films that everyone in Russia has watched and knows by heart – and which sometimes remained unknown to the rest of the world. And also about how screen fiction became reality.
