opening: 17.10.2024, 18:00

Almost exactly three years ago, the gallery presented ZAHORIAN & VAN ESPEN exhibition of Vladimir Ossif. The audience accepted with understanding the explanation that the author is a type of nomad. However, his passion is not traveling, but the desire to stay in places where he feels good and to which he has acquired a deeper relationship. He wants to stay there. Live and create. To be someone who belongs there. In retrospect, Paris, Madrid, Ortaffa, but also Bratislava, New York or Havana are his home.

Those who admire his paintings know that he emigrated to Paris, where he did not have a friendly or financial background. That he managed life's vicissitudes, was able to take care of himself and his family, that he received scholarships from the French government, thanks to which he was able to create freely. And he offers us free work even today, when he lives alternately in Slovakia, where he was born, and in Cuba. He found his life partner in Havana and the city itself appealed to him with its authenticity. Each of us is attracted by the sights in unknown cities, to see the cities in panorama. That's when we perceive roofs in particular. The red roofs of Central European cities, including Bratislava, and the silver roofs of Paris. And then there are the rooftops of Havana, which Vladimir Ossif knows.

The current exhibition brings inspiration from them. There is no need to look for reality in the works of Vladimir Ossif. The large-scale paintings are composed using segments and torsos of the chaos of objects that Vladimir Ossif saw on the rooftops of Havana. However, transformed into brightly colored geometrically framed signs, they suggestively compress the visual experience. They are a new entity. They bring messages about the environment in which the people under the roofs of Havana live, without looking into their specific lives. Above all, they are stories of a brilliant painting performance and the author's unique artistic poetics.

Even once in Paris, Vladimir Ossif apparently perceived the Parisian roofs as a dominant element of the city. However, he was inspired by them in his work only today. It was only now that he was struck by the unexpected color range of the roofs in Havana with dominant blue elements. She appealed and caught his attention so much that blue is not missing from any of the paintings, it is part of the chaos that reigns on the rooftops of Havana. The vital chaos that dominates Vladimir Ossif's latest canvases. And he shares this vitality, the joy of painting and the colors of the world that surrounds us with all the visitors of his current exhibition.
