Soul Gospel in Radvan
On Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at 7:30 p.m., lovers of true American gospel will come to the Radvan church on Hôrka. The American band The Carpenter Ants with award-winning singer John Ellison will visit Banská Bystrica.
John Ellison was the singer of the famous American music group Soul Brothers Six. Members of the group included Charles Armstrong, Harry Armstrong, Vonnell Benjamin, Lester Pelemon and Joe Johnson. Ellison was the group's lead guitarist, singer and songwriter. In 1967, Ellison wrote "She's Some Kind of Wonderful." This original version achieved extraordinary success on the US Billboard chart and influenced the sound of modern music. "She's Some Kind of Wonderful" has been recorded by over 50 different artists, making it one of the most recorded songs in music history. In 1995, Ellison received an award from Broadcast Music for writing the third most played song in the world. In November 2008, Ellison was nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year and R&B/Soul Record of the Year at the Hamilton Music Awards. In 2023, John Ellison's revamped single of the same name placed in the first round of nominations for the 66th Grammy Awards. In October 2015, Ellison was officially inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.
The Carpenter Ants
The band originating from the city of Charleston, West Virginia, has built up the status of a cult legend of the American independent scene in its four decades of existence. The Carpenter Ants themselves like to refer to their style as "chicken-fried gospel soul". It is an energetic and deeply emotional fusion of classic rhythm & blues, gospel, country-swamp and rock'n'roll. Their music is based on a rich southern tradition, it is full of precise singing harmonies, sharp guitar solos and uncompromising rhythms. The band has performed more than 3,000 concerts and has accompanied personalities such as Jesse Jackson and singer John Ellison on stage. Their albums were produced by respected American producer Don Dixon.
