About event
Dear ladies and gentlemen,
We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition
DON'T TAKE THE PRINCESS FROM US
Martina Rötling
Opening: Thursday, 4 December 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
Curator: Lucia Gavulová
Martina Rötling's "Don't take the princess" exhibition reflects the tension between social norms of bodily representation and the natural temporality of the female body. The author critically reacts to the cult of youth shaped by commercial visual culture, which often encodes body changes as a deficit, thereby symbolically depriving women of value and visibility.
Rötling works with the metaphor of the body on different levels. The metaphor of the body as a landscape makes it possible to connect the perspectives of eco-feminism (the body as part of a wider ecological and cyclical system) with social gerontology (the body as an active subject passing through continuous developmental phases). Her works thus become visual arguments against ageism and the normative aesthetic regime of late capitalism.
In the framework of figurative painting, the author systematically rewrites the tradition of the female act. She rejects the position of passive objectification and situates the body within the framework of the female agentic experience, thereby following on from contemporary feminist and posthumanist discourses. Her work thus functions as a critical analysis as well as an emancipatory visual space.
Martina Rötling (1987) studied at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, at the Faculty of Fine Arts, in the studio of contemporary painting. He repeatedly presents his work at home and abroad, at individual and collective exhibitions. He lives and works in Antwerp.
