About event
You are kindly invited to the opening of Elina Brotherus's exhibition 12 ANS APRÈS - PORTRAITS OVER TIME, which is part of the Photography & Text section of the 35th Month of Photography. Martinček, Central European House of Photography
⏰ Wednesday, 11/5/2025 at 6:00 p.m.
The photographs from the collection 12 Ans Après (12 years after) connect two very different periods in the author's life and thus offer us a moving testimony of the continuity of changes.
Twelve years ago, the Finnish photographer Elina Brotherus came to Chalon-sur-Saône in France, where she was supposed to participate in an artist residency. Armed with a camera and a pile of sticky notes, Brotherus set about intensively studying French and trying to adapt to a different environment, while documenting the whole experience. The final product, Suite françaises, is a record of the author's efforts to get to know a new language, a new country, a new culture. 12 years later, Brotherus returned to the same place as a completely different person. Over the years, she has established herself as an artist. Looking back at herself 12 years ago, she can think about how far she has come, how much has changed. In her photographs, she confronts herself in the current moment with her self that existed 12 years ago. The young woman at the beginning of her career was replaced by an older woman who knows herself.
The exhibition will last until 11/1/2026.

The photographs of 12 Ans Après juxtapose two very different times in an artist’s life, offering us a touching testimony to the continuum of change.
Twelve years ago, Finnish photographer Elina Brotherus arrived in Chalon-sur-Saône, France for an artist residency. Armed with her camera and a bunch of sticky notes, Brotherus did her best to learn French and adjust to a very different place while documenting the entire experience. The final product, Suite françaises cataloged Brotherus' attempt to acquaint herself with a new language, a new country, and a new culture.
Now, twelve years later, Brotherus returns to the exact same site as a very different person. In the intervening years, she has established herself firmly as an artist. Looking back at herself those twelve years ago, she is able to reflect on how far she has come, how much has changed. In her photographs, she is confronting both herself, in the moment, and her self that existed a dozen years ago. Gone is the young woman at the start of her career, replaced with the older woman who knows herself.
The exhibition will be on view until January 11, 2026.
