About event
We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition in the Photographer Gallery:
Andrej Pešta - Baro Frajeris
30. May - 18th September
curator: Emília Rigová
Andrej Pešta (1921–2009) was an important Roma personality - an amateur photographer, writer and artist. In the 1860s of the 20th century, he was actively involved in the ethno-emissioning movement associated with the Union of Gypsies-Roma, which he also documented photographically. His work provides an authentic view of the life of the Roma in the period of socialism - capturing the everyday life, tradition and culture from the perspective of a member of this community.
Pešta was a solitaire - one of the few Roma photographers he knows history. He donated his archive, containing approximately 1,500 negatives, the Museum of Roma Culture, which in 2017 published a publication on Fotki with a selection of his works. A year later, the exhibition of the worlds of Andrej Pešta was created, which presented his work and personal story.
The exhibition Andrej Pešta - Baro Frajeris in the Prague Gallery Photographer brings a different perspective. It focuses on displaying (exclusively) the Roma body not only behind the lens but also before it. An important aspect is the curator of the exhibition itself, which is also a Roma. This creates a unique visual and meaning triangle, rare in our contexts.
Pešta was not just a documentary filmmaker of his community. He was a chronicler of one life who was out of stereotypes. His work reminds us that what we take for granted can be a breakthrough at another time or context.
The exhibition was created with the support of the Museum of Roma Culture in Brno.
