⏰ Wednesday, 01/04/2026, 18:00

The photographs from the collection The End Is Near, Here come from Michael Dressel's book of the same name, published in 2024 and show an American society divided by extreme nationalism, political polarization, religious fanaticism and an obsession with weapons, accompanied by poverty and moral decay. His portraits are complemented by landscape shots that underline this atmosphere even more.

Michael Dressel was born in 1958 in East Berlin. He briefly studied scenography at the Weißensee Academy of Art. After an unsuccessful attempt to escape to the West, he was imprisoned for 2 years in Bory and in East Germany. After his release, he eventually made it to West Berlin and in 1985 moved to Los Angeles. There, he worked all his life as a sound editor on major Hollywood films (eg Gran Torino, A Star Is Born, Joker and many others), which, among other things, secured him membership in the Oscar Academy. Since recently leaving the film industry, he divides his time between Los Angeles and Berlin and focuses on photography. His photo book Lost Angeles was published in 2022 by Hartmann Books and Gingko Press. The author presented his latest book The End Is Near, Here (2024) from Hartmann Books at the world photography festival Rencontres d'Arles.
