About event

Leithaberger noble cherries - old cherry varieties, great taste with Andrea Strohmayer

Sweet, Spicy, fruity, almondy or almost wine-like - not all cherries are the same. But many of the traditional cherry varieties that once characterized the landscape around the Leithaberg have now almost disappeared.

Together with Andrea Strohmayer, we delve into the fascinating world of Leithaberg's precious cherries. The region's traditional cherry culture dates back to the 18th century. At the time of flowering, there were tens of thousands of cherry trees in the communities of Donnerskirchen, Purbach, Breitenbrunn, Winden and Jois. Today, dedicated producers are committed to preserving this unique cultural heritage.

The focus of the tasting workshop is on the eight cherry variety rarities from the Slow Food Presidio Leithaberger Edelkirsche: Bolaga, Donnerskirchner Blaukirsche, Frühbraune from Purbach, Hakenrte, Joiser Einsiedekirsche, Schachl, Spätbraune from Purbach and the Windener Schwarze. The participants will find out why these old varieties are so special.

The direct taste comparison will be particularly exciting: Andrea Strohmayer is bringing six pure fruit spreads with a fruit content of 80 percent. This allows you to directly experience the characteristic differences of the individual cherry varieties - from subtle acidic notes to intense fruitiness to spicy and almond-like aromas. Thanks to the uniform recipe of the fruit spreads, the characteristics typical of the variety stand out particularly clearly and make the taste diversity of the Leithaberg noble cherries directly tangible.
