About event

On the occasion of International Dance Day, we have prepared a special Dance Film Evening for you in cooperation with Edison Film Hub.

The evening will open with the short choreographic film Maldonne (2024) by the director duo Leïla Ka and Josselin Carré. The film follows eleven women, each carrying their own long-suppressed grief. Without words, a collective rebellion, an energy of resistance and a movement towards liberation are born from their shared presence. Maldonne develops the choreographic language of Leïla Ka into the film space and transforms the personal and collective experience of the female body into a strong image of defiance.

The focus of the evening will be Maguya Marin's documentary, L'Urgence d'agir / Time to Act directed by David Mambouch. The film follows the life and work of the French choreographer Maguy Marin, one of the key personalities of world contemporary dance. It harkens back to the legendary piece May B, created by Maguy Marin in 1981, which has become one of the key titles of contemporary dance over the decades. It captures the choreographer at work, follows the different generations of performers who have passed through the production, and shows how the artistic experience is passed on through the body, memory and joint work. The film will be in French with English subtitles.

Both films also present a line that we will also develop in the October Bratislava in Motion program. The evening of the dance film opens the French focus of the 30th anniversary year. This year's program will bring these exceptional works of both artists, representing two generations of choreographers who significantly shape the form of contemporary dance.

At the end of the Evening of Dance Films, we have prepared a discussion for you about what role art plays in times of social and political tension and what responsibility artists bear in defending democratic values and cultural freedom. The guests will also address the current situation in Slovak culture, the need for civic involvement and the upcoming Plan for the renewal and resilience of culture initiated by the Open Culture! platform.

Miroslava Kovářová, artistic director of the Bratislava in Motion festival, will talk with Olja Triaška Stefanović, visual artist and university pedagogue, and Mária Beňačková Rišková, editor, curator, author, member platform Open Culture! and coordinator of the content team of the Plan for the renewal and resilience of culture.
