About event

We cordially invite you to a guided tour of the exhibition UNDERGROUND: Human portrait in Archa Palace. You will be guided through the exhibition by its author, photographer Rudolf Prekop, and he will be accompanied by project guarantor and publisher of the samizdat magazine Vokno, František "Čuňas" Stárek.
From December 1, the exhibition of the Czech/Slovak photographer Rudy Prekop entitled UNDERGROUND / HUMAN PORTRAIT is open in the Archa Palace exhibition space. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and presents an extraordinary photographic cycle depicting personalities of the Czechoslovak alternative and underground culture of the 1970s and 1980s. The project was created with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the State Fund for Culture of the Czech Republic.
The UNDERGROUND / HUMAN PORTRAIT project presents an extensive gallery of portraits of personalities who, during the period of normalization, showed courageous, independent and consistently anti-totalitarian attitudes. They include musicians, poets, artists, performers and civic activists whose life stories are a strong testimony to the power of individual freedom in times of oppression. "The legacy of these personalities is not a closed chapter of the past," says the author of the exhibition, Rudolf Prekop, adding: "This is a current appeal for our present and future - for the preservation of liberal-democratic values and a free civil society." "Čunas" Starek. All 130 portraits were created using classic Hasselblad medium format analog technology, processed completely by the author – from the negative process to the final manual enlargements.
The exhibition also includes a text section with QR codes that lead visitors to the biographical medallions of the portrayed personalities. The exhibition is also complemented by screenings of unique film documentaries by František Starek from the period of the Czechoslovak underground.
The exhibition is accompanied by the publication "Underground / Human Portrait" in both Czech and English versions.
The premiere Prague presentation in the Archa Palace is the culmination of a several-year project. The author's wish is for the collection to become a permanent part of the forthcoming library of Ján Langoš at the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, as the most appropriate final addressee of the entire project.
