The Learned Society of Slovakia invites to a discussion about violence in human society from an evolutionary, historical and psychological perspective. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. in the Stary lyceum at Konventna 15 in Bratislava.
The following will discuss:
Pavol Prokop, zoologist (Institute of Zoology SAS, v. v. i., and Faculty of Natural Sciences, UK)
Dušan Kováč, historian (Institute of History SAS, v. v. i.)
Barbara Lášticová, psychologist (Institute of Social Anthropology Research SAV, v. i.) Moderated by Soňa G. Lutherová from the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology, v. v. i.
The discussants will try to answer the questions whether violence is a legacy of our evolutionary history, or how violence has developed in individual civilizations and where it has reached in modern states. It will also be discussed how social determinants - poverty, inequality, lack of opportunities - contribute to the emergence of conflicts between social groups.
Entrance to the event is free.
