After two decades as the charismatic frontman of the British band Editors, Tom Smith is opening a new chapter with his solo project. With the single "Lights Of New York City" he presents his first original song - an intimate, reflective work that marks the beginning of a new creative journey.

"Lights Of New York City longs for the lost youth; it is a song that looks back on the astonished lightheartedness of an earlier period of life," explains Smith.
Musically, the song indicates where the artist would like to move in the future: towards a more direct, more personal form of expression. He was supported by Irish singer-songwriter Iain Archer, who helped him shape and sonically implement his ideas.

The piece is accompanied by an atmospheric video directed and produced by Niall Trask.

Of his decision to temporarily step away from the role with the Editors, Smith says: “I wanted to create something that was a purer representation of the songs I write - in the simplest form in which They are created: on an acoustic guitar or on the piano. I don't know whether it's folky, country-like or crooner-like; I just follow the inner urge to write and sing sad songs. With Editors these songs usually grow into something bigger, more confrontational. This time I wanted them to stay as simple and close to their original idea as possible."

With "Lights Of New York City" Tom Smith opens a new, introspective chapter his career - characterized by emotionality, technical reduction and an unmistakable voice that is now more than ever the focus.
