About event

A conversation with historian Cormac Moore on the drawing of borders in contested spaces.

Described by Ulster Unionist leader James Craig as the ‘root of all evil’, the Irish Boundary Commission collapsed one hundred years ago in 1925. It had been a concession to Irish nationalists during the Treaty negotiations of 1921 as a way to determine the boundary between Northern Ireland and the rest of Ireland.

This event, moderated by Deutsche Welle journalist Arthur Sullivan, will explore this history of the Boundary Commission, and what lessons it holds for borders in today’s world.

The story of the failure of the Boundary Commission reveals much about the nature of Ireland’s partition and the efforts by the newly established Irish state to assert its independence.
