The relations of our territory with Egypt last for millennia. The lecture will show how and why these contacts significantly intensified in the 19th century, when Egypt became the dream exotic destination of Europeans.

It will show the journeys of the first travelers, adventurers and collectors from our environment, their cruises on the Nile, traveling on donkeys or camels, but also the first hotels, steamships and railways.

We will also talk about discomfort, diseases, adventures and how the image of Egypt was formed in the eyes of our residents as a land of pyramids, mummies and ancient monuments.


The event is organized by the Gedíd Aigyptos Foundation and the SAS Institute of Oriental Studies.
