Disability history in the USA
We invite Elizabeth Sammons, a specialist in working with disabled visitors, to a lecture.
Many unexpected factors in history have changed the existence of the world of (not only medical) disabilities. In the lecture, Elizabeth will approach some of these cultural and political causes in the United States and compare them with the development and current situation in the world of the disadvantaged in Europe.
Elizabeth Sammons is an American writer, columnist and expert in advocacy for people with disabilities (defense of their rights and interests). She was born blind and professionally combines personal experience with practice in the field of accessibility, education and public policies. She has worked in advocacy, media and education in Europe, including serving in the Peace Corps. After returning to the USA in In 2000, she worked in public administration, actively participating in debarrierization, increasing the accessibility and inclusiveness of the public social environment. She also published in professional media and in In 2019, she published the novel The Lyra and the Cross. She continues to actively participate in consulting and integrating an inclusive approach and removing barriers, whether physical (material), human (staff assistance), technological or informational (comprehensibility and availability of information for everyone).
As an expert and consultant on work with the disadvantaged, she is currently helping the Central Slovak Gallery to properly set up processes and procedures for disadvantaged visitors, as part of her stay in the gallery, realized thanks to the Fulbright Specialist Program. In May and June 2026, together with Elizabeth and the Platform of Families of Children with Disabilities, we held meetings on the topic of inclusion through the eyes of persons with disabilities - for employees of institutions and organizations operating in the field of culture, youth work, leisure activities and public space, namely in Banská Bystrica, Bratislava and Žilina.
