Jaroslav Valent, historian, editor-in-chief of the Historical Review

These are names we know from schools, from the streets and from monuments. They form the basis of our culture and identity. But what if the story is not as clear-cut as we used to think?

Discussion connected with the presentation of the book Studne mútne (2026, Artis Omnis), which reveals the lesser-known sides of some Slovak literary personalities during the period of the Slovak state, when culture was not free and every decision had a moral dimension. Society was subjected to the pressure of power, censorship and ideology, and literature did not exist outside of this reality, but was part of it.

What will the discussion be about?
• about art in a time of unfreedom
• about the personal responsibility of creators
• about the moral dilemmas of writers and intellectuals
• about the line between adaptation and loss of integrity
• about why a critical view of history is part of true patriotism
And finally about a simple but unpleasant question: what would we do we? Because the line between adapting and preserving one's integrity exists in every era.

They said about the book:
"The author explores a very sensitive, important, but neglected topic, which is sometimes very painful for the consciousness of society." Ivan Kamenec, historian

"Truth is not always pleasant and the bearers of such truth are not usually appreciated. But that is precisely why the book of truth about the collaboration of Slovak artists with the authoritarian regime of the Slovak wartime state deserves attention. For the courage with which it fully reveals the truth. But also for the precision with which it examines not only old source materials, but also still living human stories through them." Peter Darovec, literary scholar

On the cover of the book is the painting The Embrace by Cyprián Majerník from 1936.
