About event
Prague with your eyes wide open through the Strahov libraries.
The Strahov monastery is one of the oldest monasteries established on Czech territory and at the time of its beginnings it was one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe. Olomouc Bishop Jindřich Zdík, after returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, is inspired by the orders there and invites the Premonstratensians from Steinfeld in the Rhineland. Even today, the Romanesque block masonry occasionally peeks out from under the Baroque garb.
The walk takes participants through the history of the monastery, the cabinet of curiosities and both library halls, the interiors of which they will walk through together. Theological hall from the 17th century amazes with its beautiful baroque vault richly decorated with stucco and ceiling paintings. A century younger, the Philosophical Hall is one of the most beautiful library halls ever. The classicist walnut shelves create a calm, serious impression, which is enhanced by the monumental ceiling painting Spiritual Development of Mankind by the Viennese painter Anton Maulbertsch.
