About event

The experience of more than a million men conscripted in the Czech lands and deployed on the fronts of the Great War was very diverse. However, in the changing regimes of the following hundred years, there was an effort to give it a unifying story and meaning. Emphasizing the heroism of the legionnaires, the loyalty and underappreciation of the soldiers serving the House of Habsburg or the revolutionary nature of the mutinous troops at the end of the war gradually created the so-called "dispute about the Czech soldier" and how it "really" happened. The lecture will outline the variety of experiences of Czech soldiers on the battlefields of the Great War (and the conflicts shortly after it) and how diversely this experience was used in different political systems in the following century. And what and what does the existence of this dispute tell us.
Lecturer: Mgr. Michal Cáp
