About event

History is not just dates. They are decisions, mistakes, courage and blind spots that we still feel today. We invite you to a book discussion with the Czech historian and publicist Pavel Kosatík about the Slovak translation of his book The Slovak Century.

The Slovak Century is a fascinating look at the modern history of Slovakia, at the key moments of the 20th century that shaped our identity, politics and society. Kosatík does not offer a dry textbook, but a lively, reader-engaging story of a country that has gone through dramatic turning points: the creation and demise of states, totalitarianism, normalization, and the search for one's own path after 1989.

The book asks uncomfortable but necessary questions: Who are we as a nation? Why did history develop in this way? And what do we bring from the past to the present?

At the talk, you will learn more about the background behind the creation of the book, about the author's view of Slovak history and why it is important to return to it without myths and simplifications. It will be an evening about memory, identity and stories that have shaped us more than we often realize.

If you are interested in history in a broader context and want to look at the "Slovak century" from a new, thoughtful perspective, you should not miss this evening.
