About event

The guided walk will present the urban development of Dejvice and reveal the stories of the architects and buildings that shaped this district. What makes Dejvice different from the rest of Prague and why did rondocubism take hold here? All this will be presented to you by the architect Štěpán Beneš from the Association Mapamátky.

At the beginning of the 20s, Prague experienced dynamic development as the capital of a newly established and self-confident republic. The area between old Bubenčí and Dejvice was one of the most valuable vacant areas in the immediate vicinity of the center. Professor Antonín Engel won the architectural competition for the regulatory plan, and the newly marked out plots quickly began to be filled with buildings. At the same time, a new architectural style was spreading through Prague: rondocubism, so it is no coincidence that colorful facades full of semicircles, cylinders and folk ornaments appear more often in Dejvice than anywhere else in Prague.
