If there has been a philosophy and religion since ancient times that is based above all on non-violence, it was Jainism. Since the times of the forest ascetics and then since the teachings of Mahavira, one of his Tirthankaras or heroes of self-conquest. This non-violence, ahimsa, became one of the ideals of Hindu wisdom, and Gandhi even used it as a political weapon with surprising results.
Not only ahimsa, but also his doctrine of anekantavada, the " discourse of "not a single vision" or of the varied perspectives on any issue, exemplified in the parable of the blind men and the elephant; convert it into an essentially non-dogmatic philosophy.
This non-violence and attitude flourished as a science of peace, which even made its relationship with the animal and plant kingdom completely “harmless”, and Not only that, they built hospitals for all kinds of insects, from mammals to snakes and even insects, and all kinds of inspiring examples for our current ecology.
