About event
Guest: Veronika Homolová Tóthová, reporter, writer, director, documentarian
Program:
• Screening of the documentary film Hands on Glass (directed by Veronika Homolová Tóthová, 70 min, 2019). The film tells the story of the greatest heroes of the rescue of the so-called Winton's children, their parents. Through five rescued children, the film reveals the memories of their journey by train to Great Britain and their subsequent life in England. Some children were lucky enough to be reunited with their parents after the war, but most of them never saw their parents again. Their last memory is of their hands on the glass of the train window when they said goodbye to their loved ones. The film also captures the creation of the Farewell Memorial, which these children made in honor of their brave parents. This monument is a reminder of the courage, love and fateful decision that allowed these children to survive the war.
• The accompanying discussion with the author of the film will focus on human courage, bravery, ethical dilemmas and the emotional impact of difficult decisions. At the same time, the heroism of Sir Nicholas Winton, Marie Schmolková and other humanitarian workers who saved 669 Czechoslovak, mostly Jewish children from the coming Nazism in the spring and summer of 1939 will be discussed. The discussion will also focus on the significance of such actions for today's society.
The event is open to schools and the public.
