About event
We cordially invite you to the next lecture from the Collegium historiae artium cycle, which will be given by Roman Prahl (Institute for Art History of the Faculty of Arts, UK) on the topic Do we need hands to create? Topic in the genre of author's New Year's cards.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. in the meeting room (hall 117) of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Husova 4, Prague 1.
The lecture deals with the pictorial part of New Year's cards, which characterize the creative profiles of male and female artists. At the same time, the specificity of New Year's songs as a genre is their sharing and reciprocity. The authorial characteristics and reciprocity of the "PéEfek" had a strong effect during the era of political normalization. New Year's cards then offered themselves as a medium for informal artistic communities. The author's New Year's cards portray unconventional visions of harmony and hope for the future or cultivate resistance in their addressees to contemporary events and their warning signals. The lecture traces the development of the New Year's wish mainly through the visualization of the human hand. The theme of the hand emphasizes personal identity and authenticity in communication, especially with the help of handprints and its parts.
The lecture also discusses various other modalities of the theme, notes the relationship to the environment and consumer society, as well as wishes for the Christmas holidays. The current state of the genre, the coexistence of digitally distributed New Year's cards with their paper form and personal delivery is verified here.
