Rust is not only a metaphor (images of rust in literature, philosophy and art)
colloquium held 23.6.-24.6.2026 in the FF UK building at Příkopě 29 in room 402
Abstract:
Rust, i.e. the irreversible disturbance of metal, is natural, but at the same time highly an aesthetic gradual process that fascinates with its variety and color. With the first colloquium "Rust is not just a metaphor" on the topic of the appearance of rust in literature, philosophy and art, we want to lay the foundations of "rusty studies" and at the same time gather diverse perspectives on this multi-layered phenomenon, which can manifest itself in metamorphosis, deterioration, as well as the breakdown of wholeness.
Between April 15 and May 31, 2026, the organizing Institute of Romanesque Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of the Arts, invites you to send abstracts (max. 500 words) and biographies (max. 200 words) in Czech or Slovak thematically related to rust or corrosion to email: karolina.valova@ff.cuni.cz
Proposed thematic areas, which, however, are not the limit:
rust and decay
rust and industrial style
rust and metamorphosis
rust and aesthetics
rust and man
rust and time
rust and nature
rust and anti-corrosion
Organizing committee from ÚRS:
PhDr. Jaroslava Marešová, Ph.D.
PhD. Magdalena Žačková, Ph.D.
M.Sc. Karolina Válová, Ph.D.
