We invite you to a concert of old Greek and Mediterranean songs from Cyprus, the Greek islands, Crete and Asia Minor, which will be heard in the unique space of the gallery The water tower on Letná. The historic tower looks almost like a lighthouse above the city - a place between the sky and Prague, from where a beautiful view of the city opens up. It is here that for one evening old Mediterranean melodies will connect with the landscape of Prague below us.

Performers:
Angelika Christodoulou (Cyprus) – vocals
Barbora Špádová (Bohemia) – vocals, flutes
Giorgos Kalamakis (Greece) – oud
Petr Mastroiani (Bohemia) – percussion

The music you will hear grows from the mouth passed down traditions, from the singing of communities - from celebrations, memories from travels, from the sea and from everyday life. They are songs that carry joy, longing, melancholy, the rhythm of the body and the memory of Mediterranean landscapes, where different cultures, languages and spiritual worlds have met for centuries.

In today's fast-paced times, such a concert can be an invitation to silence, listen and return to the deeper layers of human experience that often disappear from our everyday life - to natural rhythm, community, memory, shared joy and sorrow, to themes of love, desire, journey and home. That's why these old songs can seem surprisingly close - they don't just bring exoticism from the past, but remind us of something essential that we still have in us. Both are united by a deep interest in old song traditions, living oral culture and music that is not only a concert repertoire, but also a carrier of memory, images and archetypes.

🍇 Angelika Christodoulou comes from Cyprus and grew up surrounded by Mediterranean music, singing and oral traditions from childhood. He is devoted to old Greek, Cypriot and Eastern Mediterranean songs as well as various forms of polyphonic singing from Greece, southern Italy and the Balkans. She brings voice, language, personal experience with this culture and a natural feeling for its inner beauty to the project.

🍇 Barbora Špádová has long been dedicated to singing, flutes and the sensitive linking of traditions across eras and cultures. In the project, he develops the sound layer of the flutes, his voice sensitively complements Angelica's singing. It helps to find a space where old Greek and Mediterranean songs can naturally meet the Czech listener.

🍇 Greek musician Giorgos Kalamakis, oud, lute player, singer and music teacher also joined the project. Hailing from the island of Zakynthos, his musical journey has led him through a classical education to a deeper study of Eastern modal music, voice and maqam/makam traditions. His playing on the oud brings to the concert the delicacy, concentration and colorful world of old musical modes.

🍇 The rhythmic level of the ensemble is completed by Petr Mastroiany, a Czech percussionist who plays frame and cup oriental drums such as daf, dayereh, bendir, tamburello, darbuka, tombak, udu and others. His playing has a rare combination of precision, energy and sensitivity - he can give songs pulse, breath and dance liveliness without disturbing their acoustic and chamber character. In his performance, rhythm is not just an accompaniment, but a living organism - it holds the music together, opens up space for other players and sometimes subtly shows the whole evening a new direction.

🍇 Jan Soukup joined the project as a producer, who has been moving for a long time on the border between music and art production, spirituality, psychology, community projects and contemporary technologies. He is interested in how old musical and spiritual traditions can enrich today's people - not only as an artistic experience, but also as a space for meeting, listening, inner silence and deeper personal development.

You can look forward to music built on modal principles close to maqam/makam traditions. Modal music doesn't just work with common major and minor scales, but with more subtle melodic paths, moods, and the character of individual notes. Each mode has its own color, direction and atmosphere - it can be festive, wistful, meditative, danceable or internally tense. Thanks to this, this music has a very direct effect on the body and emotions.

This evening is not only an invitation to a trip to the past, but also a live encounter with music that has retained the ability to speak directly to the heart - through voice, rhythm, silence and closeness between musicians and listeners. In the acoustics of the Cologne synagogue, these old melodies can be heard not as distant folklore, but as music that has something to say even to today's listeners.
