About event

The gay monument exists to honor and commemorate the LGBTQ+ community during commemoration.

queer commemoration. Why there is a gay monument?!

Every year at 4 May the LGBTQ+ community comes together on the gay monument to commemorate our victims. But what is the story behind the gay monument, why did it have to come and it became the first in the world!

Henk B. de Vries is the queer historian, Tourguide and Storyteller of Amsterdam. On 2 and 3 May prior to 4 May, he will talk about forgotten queer resistance heroes in WW2 in just half an hour and why LGBTQ+ Victims are not commemorated at the National Monument on Dam Square.

Every Saturday he also gives the LGBT History Tour, 750 years Queer History. About forgotten heroes, historical facts and about the gay/queer family. According to some participants, an emotional, proud rollercoaster.

We ask for a small contribution because only 15 people may be present due to the permit. Henk B. de Vries and Special Amsterdam Tours also ask you if you want to make a donation for the documentary on which they are working with the working title "From Gay Games to Worldpride" that should be premiered in Amsterdam with Worldpride 2026.

Come and join us for a special commemoration> . Together we honor the LGBTQ+ community and commemorate those who suffered from discrimination and persecution. Discover why this monument is so important for our community and part in solidarity and love. We hope to see you there
