About event
Presentation of the book Zdeněk Cvrkal Šorci / Nakladatelství Pavel Mervart
Zdeněk Cvrkal: Šorci
History, culture and folklore of the Turkic people of Siberia
Zdeněk Cvrkal's book is a unique publication that presents the literary, cultural and historical heritage of the Šorci nation, one of the least known
ethnic groups of southern Siberia, to the Czech reader for the very first time. The book is the result of many years of research and combines extensive translations of
traditional and modern Shor literature with an accessible popular-educational interpretation.
It offers the reader translations of poetry, fairy tales, proverbs, riddles, shamanic folklore and the main
national epic, as well as Fyodor Chyshtyakov's important novel V dolinách Mrassu, which
captures the changes in the life of the Shor people during the Soviet period modernization. The literary part is complemented by an
ethnographic and historical portrait of Horská Šoria – a region with a tradition of settled life,
natural economy and developed blacksmithing.
The publication provides an overview of traditional livelihoods, spiritual culture, architecture and the ancient history
of the settlement of the area and places everything in a wider geographical, linguistic and cultural context.
The book is intended not only for experts, but also for readers interested in the history, ethnography and cultural
diversity of Siberia.
