Lectures are designed not only for lit botany, but also for all inquisitive nature lovers who want to discover new and surprising contexts.
Together we will look into the secrets of luxury perfumes and the scents of antiquity, learn to grow bamboo and reveal how bacteria and roots of plants communicate with each other - and how man enters into this dialogue. 👨

3. Jan Kocourek: Let the World to Bambus Honšú
Annotation of lectures
👃 8. What fragrances did the Egyptian gods like, what did the Hellenistic rulers smell, and what purposes were perfumes at that time? How did people gain and combine fragrant essences in the past, what knowledge they passed on, and how did this knowledge influence the natural philosophy, science, medicine and culture at that time? We invite you to a lecture by Egyptologist Mgr. Diana Míčková, Ph.D., from the Institute of Arts of the Academy of Sciences, which together with other scientists from the alchemy project seeks to experiment with ancient procedures, and also cooperate with the Botanical Garden of Prague. The fragrance alchemy project, led by Sean Couglin, was supported by the Czech grant agency. The event takes place in cooperation with the Institute of Arts of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
🥀 9. 3. 🥀
Why do some plants die and what is behind their loss? Can it be prevented, and if so, what steps can take botanical gardens and other professional institutions? What methods and strategies are used today to save endangered plant species and what do experts for their protection do? We will answer these and other questions in this lecture, where we look at real examples, current challenges and possibilities to help plants in the fight for survival. Bamboo is a fascinating plant that hides many secrets. How to properly grow bamboo in our conditions? What types are winter resistant and which are suitable for gardens, terraces or interiors? And what are the real possibilities of their use - from ornamental purposes to ecological and cultural meanings? At the lecture you will learn not only about the cultivation of bamboo, but also about attractions from history and their ecology. Gradually, we learn to understand how bacteria exchange information, how plants communicate through their roots, how mushrooms, insects, higher animals are involved and eventually man. Let us leave complex patterns and immerse ourselves in the miracle of life to better understand how this stunning system of nature works.
🌺 22. In the vast majority of orchids, these are designed to attract pollinators and make them transfer pollen to another plant. The specific structure of orchid flowers allows you to carry significantly larger amounts of pollen than other plants. In the lecture, I will first introduce why it is important to orchids, and therefore why they developed such a complicated flower building. Another part of the lecture will be devoted to how orchids attract pollinators to their flowers. Some species give pollinators a reward, such as nectar. However, many species have no reward and they deceive the pollinators.
🇯🇵 23. 3. In addition to knowing bamboo and trees, we will also dive into the world of bonsai and niwaki, which represent a masterpiece of patience and care.
