About event

Population growth in Czechoslovakia during the 20th century was closely related to economic development and significantly influenced the functioning of society. In the period of the First Republic, demographic growth was based on industrialization, urbanization and relative economic stability, which supported the creation of working families, especially in cities and industrial regions.

However, the economic crisis of the 1930s brought an increase in unemployment, social insecurity and a temporary decrease in the birth rate, which was also reflected in a change in family strategies.
The Second World War meant not only significant demographic losses, but also the disruption of economic structures and the labor market.

Post-war reconstruction and nationalization of industry created new job opportunities which, together with social security, led to population growth and a post-war baby boom.
During the socialist period, demographic development became the subject of state policy – support for young families, housing construction, available employment and an expanded social security system directly influenced the high birth rate, especially in the 1960s and 1970s.

Strong population years had a fundamental impact on society: they created pressure on education, healthcare, housing and the labor market, but at the same time ensured enough labor for industry and agriculture.

At the end of the 20th century, after 1989, economic transformation, rising living costs and changing values led to the postponement of parenthood and a significant drop in the birth rate.
Demographic development has thus become one of the key factors influencing the aging of the population, the sustainability of the social system and the long-term economic prospects of society.
