The idea of establishing a tradition of marches with international participation along the approximate route of Vrba and Wetzler's escape from Auschwitz to Slovakia's Žilina, where they wrote their report, was born in the mind of Rudolf Vrba's daughter Zuzana. It was her dream, the fulfillment of which she has yet to see.
It has been many years since Fedor Gál became friends with Rudolf Vrba's first wife, Gerta, who told him about the desire of their daughter Zuzana, who died prematurely. Fedor turned to the Prague branch of the ICEJ (International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem) and a joint effort created the tradition of marches in 2014. In 2023, the Slovak civic association Vrba Wetzler Memorial joined the organization of the marches.
In order to commemorate this heroic act, we have therefore been marching from Auschwitz to Žilina since 2014. We are reading excerpts from the books I escaped from Auschwitz and What Dante did not see, written years after the escape by Vrba and Wetzler.

We are leaving on Monday, August 17 and will arrive in Žilina on Saturday, August 22, 2026. We will cover a total of about 130 km.
