About event
PIO brings to Puncta a stirring tribute to the visionary Sun Ra - music on the border between jazz, avant-garde and free improvisation performed by the best of the Czech experimental scene. The evening will be completed by a solo performance by Almut Schlichting, who combines voice, rhythm and saxophone in an intense improvisational form.
PIO returns to Puncta with a unique program of Sun Ra compositions. This distinctly unconventional American composer of the 20th century encompassed the evolution of jazz from swing to the avant-garde in his work and was one of the essential figures of the American music scene in the 1960s and 1970s. He fundamentally contributed to new approaches to composition for jazz big bands and at the same time stood at the birth of influential DIY methods of independent music production and distribution - he released more than 100 LPs on his own Saturn Records label.
PIO (Prague Improvisation Orchestra), founded in 2012 by George Cremaschi and Petr Vrba, brings together outstanding personalities of the Czech experimental and improvisation scene. He works with controlled and free improvisation, open scores and graphic notation. He has around 70 projects to his credit - from site-specific concerts to multidisciplinary collaborations with choreographers, visual artists or light designers. saxophones
Martin Debrička – saxophones
Petr Vrba – trumpet
Vojtěch Procházka – keyboards
George Cremaschi – double bass
Elia Moretti – drums and percussion
Almut Schlichting – baritone saxophone
German saxophonist Almut Schlichting will present a solo program TUSBLU, originally created for SoloImpro Festival 2023 in Berlin. It is based on a poem by the contemporary Berlin author Ulrich Goerdten, which forms its structural basis. Here, the composition functions more like a framework – improvisation plays the main role.
Within the Musikfonds scholarship, Schlichting created her own set of musical materials and procedures. He is inspired by various vocal traditions working with rhythm and on the border between speech and singing: from American beatboxing and hip hop to West and East African griots to Oulipo sound poetry and Dadaism. 250-450 CZK
The concert was financially supported by Hl. the city of Prague and SFK.

PIO returns to Punctum with their unique program of Sun Ra compositions. Sun Ra was one of the great iconoclastic US composers of the 20th century. Spanning the history of jazz from swing to avant garde, he was one of the key figures of American music in the 60s and 70s, pioneering new forms and approaches to jazz big band composing. Sun Ra also established highly influential "do-it-yourself" methods of independent record production and distribution, publishing over 100 LPs on his own label, Saturn Records.

Almut Schlichting – baritone saxophone
Almut Schlichting originally created her solo program TUSBLU for a performance at the SoloImpro Festival 2023 in Berlin. She has chosen the poem TUSBLU by the contemporary Berlin poet Ulrich Goerdten as a structural basis (text see below). Compositional elements appear as sketches, but the focus is on improvisation.
Schlichting developed a new pool of musical materials and strategies during a Musikfonds scholarship. She intensively studied various singing cultures, all of which deal with rhythmic music and cross the boundaries between singing and speaking: from American beatbox / hip-hoppers to West and East African griots and griottes to the rhyme and sound concepts of Oulipo sound poetry and Dadaism.
