Pillnitz Castle
In the Baroque period, so to speak, in front of the gates of Dresden, Pillnitz Castle was purchased by the Elector of Saxony August the Strong to dedicate it to his favorite mistress, Countess Anna Constancia von Cosel. After Countess Coselová fell out of favor with the Saxon court, August had the castle completely rebuilt between 1720 and 1724. According to the design of the architect Daniel Pöppelmann, two representative palaces were built, the »Wasserpalais« (Water Palace) right by the Elbe River and the »Bergpalais« (Mountain Palace) towards the sunny slopes of the Elbe. This formed the basis of the largest castle complex in Europe, created in the Chinese style, the so-called »Chinoiserie«. Later, during the reign of Friedrich August the Just, the Pillnitz castle became the summer residence of the Saxon royal family (year 1868).
In the Bergpalais and Wasserpalais palaces today the »Arts and Crafts Museum / Kunstgewerbemuseum« is located, and in the »New Palace / Neues Palais« visitors will find the castle museum »Schlossmuseum«. Both museums are open from May to October. Visitors to the castle museum will see the royal court kitchen (Hofküche), a classicist hall with an elaborately decorated dome, the so-called Kuppelsaal, as well as the local Catholic chapel, and learn interesting facts from the often turbulent history of the former royal summer residence.
Bastei - symbol of Saxon Switzerland
Bastei is a rock formation with viewing platforms in Saxon Switzerland on the right bank of the Elbe between the town of Rathen and the town of Wehlen. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Saxon Switzerland. From the bastion of a narrow rock cliff at a height of 194 m above the level of the Elbe River, there are wide views of the river valley and the Elbe Sandstone. There is a hotel and restaurant on the plateau behind the rock formation. The Basteibrücke rock bridge dates from 1851, when it replaced the original wooden bridge from 1824.
