The unique and prized documentary Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story charts Pauline's forty-year musical career and her tireless efforts for racial equality. The screening, which will take place on May 18 at the Cargo Gallery, will be accompanied by a discussion with the participation of Pauline Black herself and the director of the documentary, Jane Mingay. The evening will conclude with a DJ set.
Pauline Black is the living embodiment of the 2-Tone musical movement that helped move British society towards diversity and brought a whole new anti-racism, sexism and gender politics ethos that we still strive for today. Her band The Selecter, who will also perform at the 20th annual Mighty Sounds, has a unique sound and energy that has been defined by Pauline's signature voice and performance. Like their fellow members of the 2-Tone movement, The Selecter were a reflection of working-class life in England during Margaret Thatcher's reign, and focused mainly on the fight against racism and sexism; their music was social reportage.
Pauline's amazing life story informs her art, music and influences her activism - through Pauline's unique and unusual experience of adoption, abuse, personhood, gender and endurance, we see how one woman's pioneering and innovative experience is a relevant and essential prism for looking at race and women from post-war Britain to the present day. Pauline is a liberated woman who stood on her feet and left a mark on society - an inspiration for a whole generation of women who cannot be overlooked.
