The interview will focus on the speaker's experience from the period of protests in 1989 and the Tiananmen Square massacre, his subsequent contact with other opponents of the regime as well as the current state of freedom in China.

Zhou Fengsuo is widely recognized and respected in activist communities for his strong leadership, humanitarian work, and inclusive vision for social change. As a physics student at Tsinghua University, he organized the first and only free student union election in 1988. During the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, he created and led the "Voice of Student Movements" in Tiananmen Square. He was ranked fifth on the list of most wanted student leaders after the Tiananmen Square massacre and was arrested and spent a year in prison.

After leaving China in the mid-1990s, Zhou continued his pro-democracy and human rights activist activities for the Chinese cause. In 2000, he was the lead plaintiff in a civil case against Li Peng, he became director and then president of the China Foundation for Democratic Education between 2001 and 2010, and in 2007 he co-founded Humanitarian China, an organization providing humanitarian aid to hundreds of families of political prisoners and mothers from Tiananmen Square peace, including lawyers, journalists, workers' and women's rights activists, political protesters, and persecuted house churches. Since then, he continues to lead and support the organization. In 2014, Zhou secretly returned to Beijing to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, was arrested and sent back, and participated in the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong that same year.

As the executive director of Human Rights in China, a long-standing and well-known Chinese human rights organization, Zhou took full responsibility for supporting his community and his cause. He has demonstrated inspirational power in mobilizing and empowering young Chinese human rights defenders in the diaspora to support human rights defenders in China, and in working together and providing solidarity to the Uyghur and Tibetan communities. He is a frequent speaker on university campuses, including the Oxford Union, and has testified before US legislative bodies, including the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC). This year, on the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, he helped organize commemorations around the world, from Taipei to the British Parliament, to ensure that the sacrifice and message of freedom of 1989 would never be forgotten.
