How much can you talk about Holmes and Watson?
The question is rhetorical. This year marks 140 years since their appearance on the pages of Arthur Conan Doyle's first book, and there is no doubt that if anything remains of our culture in its current form, life without this couple will be impossible to imagine even in 1400 years.
But how did it happen?
• How did an aspiring writer manage to create heroes who have been adored in all corners of the world for a century and a half, even by those who have not read a single line of stories about Sherlock?
• Who and what inspired Conan Doyle when creating the character of Holmes?
• What role did the first magazine illustrations play in the insane popularity of these texts?
• Why was the relationship between the author and his most famous hero so complex?
• What role did London, the British Empire and provincial England play in the texts about Sherlock?
• How Conan Doyle and did he take on the role of detective?
• Were the author and his hero inveterate conservatives and imperialists or, conversely, supporters of progress and almost proto-feminists?
• How have the images of Holmes and Watson changed over the course of a century of film adaptations, and what place does the Soviet one take among these film adaptations?
Finding answers to all these questions during one lecture is not easy, but we can do it!
This lecture will be held in the beloved Pelmenarn on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square (nám. Jiřího z Poděbrad) 3), and will begin at 19:00 on Friday 19 June. We will have a separate room at our disposal, and I will only be glad if you combine the intake of spiritual food with the consumption of beer, lemonade and other strong drinks, and ask me tricky and not so questions. The lecture will last approximately an hour and a half, after which we will be able to move into a free mode of questions, answers and other considerations.
If you have any questions or difficulties, find me in messages on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ilya.faybisovich/), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/londonandall/) or telegram or whatsapp by phone +420 773 798 702.
