About event

Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, Johann Strauss the Younger, Edmund Eysler and Carl Millöcker are representatives of different generations of operetta authors, a consistently successful and equally consistently underrated musical theater genre. The reputation of the decadent and slightly outdated folk entertainment is not fair. There are also very successful works in operetta, both musically and dramatically. Strauss's Bat from 1874 is one of the best. The funny carousel of plots enriched with melodies in the rhythm of waltz and czardash became one of the best-known representatives of the golden age of Viennese operetta. It is also in the repertoire of opera houses. The Merry Widow from 1905, a work by Franz Lehár, a Viennese graduate of the Prague Conservatory, student of Antonín Dvořák, abounds in a similar charm. Carl Millöcker's works are less numerous and less well-known, but the Austrian musical environment significantly co-created dozens of Eysler's operettas. In the first half of the 20th century, in addition to Lehár's works, Kálmán's operettas Čardášová princezna or Hraběnka Marica stood out, offering immortal melodies and no less brilliantly fulfilling the rules and signs of the genre.
