About event
We cordially invite you to watch the online lecture on Czech by Mgr. Hany Dufková, Ph.D., from the Institute of Czech Language and Theory of Communication, Faculty of Arts, UK. The lecture entitled: "That's a fascist too! On the transformation of the discourse of strong words of the 20th century" will be broadcast on Thursday 21/05/2026 from 18:00 (CEST).
The meanings and functions of words change as society changes. But what if the use of words to describe the fundamental political and social ideologies that shaped the entire history of Europe in the 20th century changes? In the lecture, I will look at where the use of words such as fascist, Nazi, fascism, Nazism and other related words is moving in the Czech public discourse, why connections such as rainbow fascism and corporate fascist arise, and I will outline the reasons why this is happening. I will not offer a way out and save encyclopedic knowledge, but a guide to understanding these changes in the wider context of the contemporary world and language.
M.Sc. Hana Dufková, Ph.D., works at the Institute of the Czech Language and Theory of Communication at the FF of the UK, leads workshops for schools, organizes events for the public including the Czech Day festival, revises the tests of the unified entrance exams in Zermatt and participates in the Ask the Scientists project. She is interested in language didactics, public discourse, lay linguistics, sign languages and social aspects of communication, and deals with communication and the popularization of science. She stopped believing that language can and should be controlled.
