🎷 Uncompromising London saxophonist brings to Prague the most interesting of the new jazz scene
𝘜ncompromising 𝘓ondon saxophonist at the front of the new scene 🎷
One of the most prominent representatives of the contemporary London jazz scene. A brilliant saxophonist and composer drawing on all sources of black music 🔥
Around the end of the last decade, the music media was flooded with a wave of interest in young British, specifically London jazz, i.e. jazz made up mostly not of "pure" Englishmen, but representatives of the rich community there, descendants of immigrants from all corners of the world. From the social point of view, this extremely fertile scene has two great positive specifics: in addition to the most open national spectrum, it is also an unprecedented gender balance. Certainly never and nowhere before have there been so many outstanding women in jazz music, so many excellent instrumentalists and composers, so many skilled bandleaders.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗮 And of course also Nubya Garcia, a thirty-three-year-old native of 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗻 with Guyanese-Trinidad parents. Her family was culturally oriented, and in little Nubia, her parents encouraged musical talent from an early age by teaching her to play the violin and viola, as well as singing. But at the age of ten, she met jazz and the saxophone, which she literally fell in love with. Several years of systematic learning and playing with the first bands culminated in a scholarship at Boston's Berklee and subsequently a successful completion of the London Conservatory. Although Nubya Garcia worships the great jazz saxophonists Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and John Colt as her main role models no , but at the same time in his music he works with a variety of influences from black or Latin music – dubstep, reggae, cumbia, calypso, hip hop and soul are most often mentioned. She makes sure that her music is above all energetic and does not keep the listener calm. She says: "Jazz is originally dance music and I'm actually going back to its roots."
She made her debut in 2017 on the independent London jazz label Jazz Refreshed, and released her breakthrough album Source three years later on a major label Concord Jazz. The following year, Nubya Garcia performed at the JazzFestBrno festival. An enthusiastic review in the cultural magazine UNI says, among other things: "Garcia was not afraid of relatively long solos, and until the listener happened to glance at his watch, he didn't even realize it was 'long'." The saxophonist had accumulated an almost inexhaustible supply of ideas, which she dosed and graded so elegantly that she did not let the audience fall out of the action. There was no way she would run out of imagination after a few choruses."
"Nubya Garcia is one of the most respected names in the new London jazz scene. He has been at the top of this genre for five years." Huck Mag
