🟡 USA, early fifties of the last century. After returning from the front, soldiers struggle with their post-war traumas and try to integrate into normal life. One of them is Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), who tries in vain to control his rages with heavy doses of hand-mixed alcohol. With each nervous outburst, he sinks lower and lower and gradually becomes a sightless outlaw. By coincidence, he meets the charismatic Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who is on his way to New York with his devoted wife (Amy Adams) and a group of loyal supporters, where he intends to present his new teachings to the world. Lancaster Dodd, called "The Master" by those around him, is fascinated by Freddie's spontaneity and undertakes his "treatment" according to his own theory, which is soon to become an impressive belief.
